My current set of photos were taken Wednesday, March 19, Saint Joseph's Night, in New Orleans. This is the night the Mardi Gras Indians, or "Black Indians," take to the streets. To learn more about this amazing culture, see my blog here.
Pastel Dancers
I just submitted a couple of recent pastel paintings of ballet dancers. I did a new blog post on my process. Please go take a look:

Centaurs
A few weeks ago I posted that I was painting unicorns and other mythical beasts. My latest paintings have been centaurs. I've been visualizing centaurs outside of the modern perception of the centaur from Greek myth as a horse/human, and looking at centaurs as they might be from various parts of the world. My last painting was of a Sapmi/Scandinavian centaur with a reindeer body, and my newest submission is an East African centaur who is half Springbok.
You can see my process, and some thoughts about the mythology of the centaur, here: https://killthehero.wordpress.com/2017/03/21/centaur-shepherdess-step-by-step/
Unicorns
I've decided to paint some mythical beasts. No, not because of the movie... I thought unicorns were a good place to begin. Actually the story of how I arrived at that is on my newest blog post: https://killthehero.wordpress.com/2017/02/23/unicorn-step-by-step/
I'm also experimenting with a new signature for my paintings. I used to do a stylized 'K'. I was never fully satisfied with that. At the suggestion of my GF, I started using a five-stroke shape of a wren. You can see that in the bottom left of my unicorn painting. Tell me if you like it. It's still a bit of a work-in-progress...
I had an odd experience...
A couple of weeks ago, an odd thing happened here on DA. OK, maybe not odd. Odd for me. I always considered DA a very safe space on a very dangerous Internet. I like it here. I like people's art, I like the contacts I've made here, and I like the groups.
I got a post on my profile a few weeks ago from a user whom I did not know, and had never interacted with, that read "Jesus loves you."
Now anyone who looks carefully at my artwork and my posts can probably see that I am of an "alternative" religion. I don't shout it from the rooftops, but I'm certainly not hiding it. Getting an unsolicited post that "Jesus loves" me is a bit disturbing. Es
